Dr J D Bapat is an independent professional working as consultant, developer, trainer, author for engineering education and research, stationed at Pune, Maharashtra, India

Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, he is educated at highly reputed institutions with consistently good academic record (see Curriculum Vitae for more details).

In 37 years of successful career, he spent 16 years conducting research, training and consultancy at National Council for Cement and Building Materials (NCB), New Delhi, 3 years at Walchandnagar Industries, Walchandnagar engaged in process design and marketing of modern cement plants machinery and 17 years at reputed engineering colleges under the University of Pune, as teacher, researcher and administrator, before launching as an independent consultant in 2011.

He started his academic career in 1994 as a Professor and Head of Chemical Engineering Department, at Bharati Vidyapeeth’s College of Engineering, then affiliated to the University of Pune. There he rose to the rank of Director: Postgraduate Studies and Research. Later for six years, he worked as Principal at the AISSMS College of Engineering and Maharashtra Academy of Engineering, Pune.

As a teacher and the department head, he taught the subject of concrete technology at the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT, Bombay. He also introduced, for the first time, teaching the subject of Fuel Cell Technology as an elective in the University syllabus.

He had a successful career as Principal. During his tenure, the Students of the College topped the University final BE examination, consistently. He also introduced modern management concepts in the College and made it more responsive to the needs of the students and the faculty. He gave special attention to the image building of the organisation. Under his guidance the College received Grade – A in NAAC Accreditation. Dr J D Bapat possesses expertise in NAAC/NBA accreditation and ISO for the educational institutions. There was also substantial improvement in the R&D activity and the number of research projects funded by the external agencies, like University, AICTE, DST and so on. The college witnessed substantial interaction with the industry experts, which enriched the learning experience for the students.

His book, “Mineral admixtures in Cement and Concrete”, has been published by the CRC Press: Taylor & Francis Group, USA

Need for Expert Guidance and Services:

According to a recent survey published by a reputed agency, no Indian University figures in the top 200 global educational institutions. As the demand for engineers increased, large number of engineering colleges have been established in the country. Most of these colleges are owned privately and affiliated to the State-Sponsored Universities. Besides, large number of private universities are also likely to be established through the Universities Act approved by the different States. Not to forget the reputed Foreign Universities, waiting for suitable Bill to be passed in the Indian Parliament, welcoming them. To sum, the competition in the higher education is going to increase in the future and the rule “survival of the fittest” shall apply. Attracting good students will be a major challenge and only those institutions shall survive and prosper which maintain quality.

Besides maintaining highest standards in teaching and laboratory work, research will also require adequate attention. In fact, it will be difficult to maintain the quality in teaching, unless the faculty is involved in the research on the subject. Training and placement scenario shall also undergo changes. The training in soft skills to make the students suitable for jobs is an important aspect of their personality development and will require adequate attention. The hitherto neglected industry-institute interaction will become a necessity, if an educational institution wants to remain ahead of the competitors. The Image Building shall become an important activity in college administration. The system of administration will have to be made transparent and student-centric.

The accreditation by NBA or NAAC is the accepted norm of quality, although educational institutions of the future will be required to surpass the accreditation criteria. The requirements of accreditation are stringent and educational institutions will be required to bring in grass-root level changes in the standard of teaching and infrastructure to obtain good Grade.

Dr J D Bapat’s expert guidance and services help the engineering institutions in their endeavors towards achieving excellence. He provides consultancy services to the engineering institutions in the following areas:

(a) Establishing new engineering institutions

(b) strategic planning and coordination. Developing efficient, transparent and student-centric system of administration

(c) Accreditation and ISO. The submission of form and other documents give broad idea about the institution to the accreditation agency. However the Accreditation Grade depends upon what is presented to the team of experts, when they visit the institution. That requires considerable preparation.

(d) Improving results at FE and BE. The students seek admissions, based on the reputation of institution in this area.

(e) Developing research laboratories and postgraduate departments

(f) Training and placement, especially development of soft skills and securing jobs for students lower in the rank.

(g) Industry-institute interaction

(h) Image building: brochures, website, media projections

(k) Writing research proposals for funding by external agencies.

(m) Teaching and seminar in the subjects: (a) Mineral admixtures for sustainable cement and concrete and (b) Fuel cell technology
